About LSHO

The award-winning London School of Hula and 'Ori (LSHO) is a team of established teachers dedicated to perpetuating traditional Polynesian dance and wellness practices of Hula (Hawaiian Dance) and ‘Ori Tahiti (Tahitian Dance) through community and movement. While challenging the UK’s relationship with the fancy dress dashboard Hula doll, we aim to provide a more in-depth and all-encompassing understanding of Polynesian dance movements and culture. By making these dance styles accessible in the UK and across the globe, we have built a group of culturally knowledgeable and technically skilled dancers, and an active and supportive 'Ohana (community). We believe that dance holds a valuable place in nurturing and healing the self, each other, and our earth.
We hold regular courses, classes, and workshops, present showcases and exhibitions, engage in many community and social events, take group trips to the islands, and perform and compete internationally.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join!

The Dances

People often confuse Hula and 'Ori Tahiti, or think that all styles fall under Hula. However, they come from different Polynesian islands and have their very own unique identities. There are different styles within Hula and 'Ori Tahiti and, at LSHO, you will learn the differences and how to perform them.
Hula and ‘Ori Tahiti both offer very different experiences and, while most of our dancers love dancing both, you can read more about the dances to see if you might have a preference.

Hawaiian Hula

Grace and discipline. Hula is dramatic and emotive and requires a great deal of strength and control. It can be a more slow paced and a relaxed atmosphere, providing a deeply intense and soulful workout.

'Ori Tahiti

Stamina and sensuality. 'Ori Tahiti is punchy and spirited and the organic movements vary from sharp to fluid. It is often a high-energy atmosphere, providing a sweaty and exciting workout.

International Shows and Competition

LSHO participates in international competition in order to learn from and share with other groups from around the world, and have done several group trips to Tahiti with more plans on the horizon. In 2019 we won 1st place Mehura and 3rd Place 'Ōte’a at Heiva i Paris as well as 3rd Place Mehura (Professional) at 'Ori Tahiti Nui Competition in Tahiti.
